Bone Up On
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is important for all ages. Children and young adults need
it for healthy bone growth. It helps keep bones healthy in adults.
Vitamin D also improves muscle function.
For most people,
sunlight is the main source of vitamin D. You also get vitamin D by
eating egg yolks, oily fish (salmon, mackerel, cod liver oil),
fortified cereals, orange juice and dairy products.
Many people have low vitamin D levels and may need supplements to
get the recommended daily amount: 200 units per day for people ages
5 to 50, 400 units for those ages 51 to 70, and 600 units for people
age 71 and older. These minimum requirements are being studied and
may increase significantly.
